Dean Michael Jackson has published through Amazon.com's CreateSpace a Cold War/espionage novel titled Best Laid Plans (see link at bottom of page) that asks the question: Was the collapse of the USSR in 1991 a ruse?
Description of Novel
An ingenious plan. A master plan of strategic deception. A scheme the Soviets were sure would bring the defeat of their adversaries in the West, but in June 1987 a United States special operations unit on a mission inside Afghanistan accidentally uncovers the Soviet master plan, sending details of the plan back to the CIA via satellite link. When an attempt is made to access the intelligence from CIA computers and learn its contents, nothing is found. Now the CIA personnel who picked up the intelligence from the American unit are targets for elimination, while at the same time finding themselves under suspicion by CIA Counterintelligence.
Spanning the globe from the treacherous winding chasm of the Khyber Pass to the rich haunts of Georgetown, Washington, D.C.; from the arid, war-torn Afghan landscape to the woods enshrouded headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency in Mclean, Virginia; from the frantic Cold War flight operations at McGuire Air Force Base to the center of Soviet deception in Moscow, Best Laid Plans takes the reader into a world no other Cold War espionage novel has ventured...a world where victory or defeat will not be decided by the clash of arms, but by perception alone.
